Included in the Yorkshire Pass
Clifford’s Tower is one of the most popular Yorkshire Attractions thanks to its spectacular views of the historic city centre of York.
Set upon a tall conical mound that over looks the River Ouse, Clifford’s Tower is almost all that remains of York Castle, which was originally built by William the Conqueror in 1086.
The tower has a fascinating history and has been home to a royal mint, a prison and is where Henry VIII gave a stark warning to those that would oppose him by putting the bodies of his enemies on display.
Visitors can enter the interior of Clifford’s Tower and see what remains of the original building work from the 11th Century, as well as the numerous extensions and repairs that took place up until the 17th Century. Amongst the ruins you can find the two prisons and what is left of the castle’s Assize courts. If you do climb to the top of the tower, you will be rewarded with fantastic sights of York below.
